This course has been developed with 16 hours of classroom lectures and 16 hours of hands-on skills labs to provide practical understanding and skills required to install, test, and troubleshoot PON and active Ethernet FTTx systems according to ITU, IEEE, and SCTE standards.Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards.

Description:

Examines the fundamental principles behind basic data and voice transmission via fiber optic cable; covers light theory, refraction, reflection, critical angle, cable mode, and index ratings, and installation and termination techniques. Topics covered include fiber construction and fabrication techniques, numerical aperture,multi-mode and single-mode transmission theory, intermodal and intra-modal dispersion, fiber attenuation, bending losses, fiber scattering mechanisms, and fiber splicing and connector termination hardware, system testing, and troubleshooting.
